With reference to your letter of June 8th rela-
tive to the duties recently imposed by the Japanese
Government on the exportation of tea from Formosa,
I am directed by the Marquess of Salisbury to trans-
mit to you a copy of a despatch from Her Majesty's
Chargé d'Affaires at Tokio enclosing the reply re-
ceived from the Japanese Minister for Foreign Af-
fairs on the subject.
It does not appear to Lord Salisbury that any
good would result from addressing a further Note to
the Japanese Government at present but Mr. Whitehead
has been instructed to press Viscount Aoki from time
to time verbally as to the result of his efforts
to obtain the abolition of the duties in question.
Under Secretary of State
Colonial office.
I am, Sir,
Your most obedient,
humble Servant,
Francis Bertie
